What is ScanTherm Thermography Training?

First, please do see some testimonials from trainees here – they are worth more than our own claims!

ScanTherm Applied Building Thermography Training is fundamentally different from the “normal” Level 1/Category 1 or Level 2/Category 2 ISO standard training provided by others. The basis of our training is huge experience of building surveys. We “preach what we practice”. Our 3-day training is recognised as the most targeted and focused building applications training available in thermal imaging in the UK. It is entirely relevant to UK construction methods and standards. The training contains many thermographic case studies from various types of buildings. From historic and listed buildings, through Victorian structures to modern high volume residential and commercial buildings, all the way to Passivhaus constructions.

What is more – we are independent from camera manufacturers so we can give you unbiased advice on what brand and type of thermal camera to buy, dependent on your specific needs.

Our lead trainer has provided training in building thermography for 12 years. He has provided training both to and for the 3 major thermal camera brands Flir, Testo and Fluke and maintains a good relationship with all. In fact ITC, the largest global infrared training company,  offers ScanTherm Advanced Building Thermography courses to clients from time to time in the UK.

Building thermography training

The training is particularly relevant to conducting practical surveys of the building fabric and major plumbing and heating systems within.  Building thermography applications are primarily grouped into:

  • Thermal imaging to locate heat/energy loss (insulation, thermal bridging and air leakage/movement)
  • Thermal imaging to find locate structural moisture and trace leaks
  • Thermal imaging of plumbing, heating, UFH etc

Please contact us for a course outline and syllabus or to discuss your individual needs.

ScanTherm Applied Building Thermography Courses

The most popular course is our 3-day Applied Building Thermography course (course code: S3BT).

This is targeted at complete beginners or people with a Level 1 or Level 2 certification but little practical experience. It is a full immersion into the world of building thermography. It is surely the fastest way to get to the point where the trainee has enough knowledge and confidence to start practicing thermal imaging surveys of buildings. Equally importantly, by the end of the 3 day training course, the trainee should know their own limitations and that of their equipment.

We also offer a further 3-day course Advanced Applied Building Thermography (course code: S3ABT).  This is suitable as a follow-up to S3BT or for Level 1 or Level 2 thermographers with more experience of buildings and thermography. It covers similar areas but to a greater depth and introduces quasi-quantitative methods.

We also provide bespoke or custom courses ranging from a 1-day introduction to individual or team mentoring.

We have a range of cameras from different manufacturers available on the courses if you do not have your own – these are sometimes available to hire or loan for solo use. It is sometimes better not to rush into a camera purchase prior to training as you may change your view (up or down!)  after the course and you really understand what you need.

Category 1 and Category 2 Thermography Training to ISO 18436/7.

We offer conventional Category 1 and Category 2 (also known as Level 1 and Level 2) thermography training courses in line with ISO 18436/7 in conjunction with ITC – please contact us for more details.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Thermography Courses

We have provided CPD compliant training in building thermography for RICS, RIBA and CIOB in a number of locations in recent years. We are pleased to provide in-house CPD training to existing and potential clients at little or no cost (depending on location). This can be very beneficial to broaden understanding of what thermal imaging can, and can’t do in an open and non-commercial environment whilst logging some CPD hours.

Why ScanTherm for Building Thermography Training?

There are 4 reasons.

  1. Our approach really is unique. The training is not shackled to the existing ISO standards which are too generalist and are designed primarily to cover industrial and electrical applications and not buildings! In fact, the widely quoted standard 18436/7 has the title “Condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines — Requirements for qualification and assessment of personnel — Part 7: Thermography”. See ISO website. In other words whilst it is useful thermographic training generally, it is not even targeted at building thermographers. ScanTherm building thermography training specifically covers the associated building science and related test methods and processes required to be able to conduct building investigations.  You will achieve more in a 3-day training than you thought possible! It is hard work but always fun.

  2. Our construction thermography experience. We have been providing BREEAM thermographic surveys, working on residential and commercial buildings looking for  heat loss, diagnosing plumbing and HVAC systems and tracing structural water leaks since 2008. This qualifies us to teach from personal experience of thousands of surveys over many years.

  3. Technical competence. Our lead trainer has post graduate engineering qualifications and a technical career running back over 35 years. This started when he used infrared imaging in Research and Development activities both in the UK and Germany in the late 1980s. We therefore have a strong technical understanding as well as practical experience from new builds, maintenance, renovations and historic building diagnostics.  Prior to ScanTherm, he ran the UK arm of Infrared Building Solutions – a pan-European thermography training consultancy> Here he co-developed building thermography course materials and trained 100s of student in building thermography.

  4. Certification. We have been certified at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 in thermography.

So, the unique structure of our applied thermography training built around UK construction case studies separates us from anything else. Whether you are a beginner, or have a little experience or are an experienced thermographer wanting to now learn about the unique world of building thermography, we have something for you.
